Country Music Country Music, also known as country and western, a popular American music genre that originated in the rural South and West in the early 20th century. The record company in 1949 accepted the term country and western music (which was later made into country music) to replace the traditional mountain music. Ultimately, the roots of country music lie in the ballads, folk songs, and popular songs of the English, Scottish, and Irish people living in Appalachia and other parts of the South.
