The writers have combined moments of great drama, humor, wit, irony, tragedy, and action into the story. The best part is that there is also a lot of historical wisdom as the film continues to refer to Sikh and Muslim history.
At one point, the opposition leader declares war on the British army and the Sikhs instigate jihad and his fellow leader reminds him that Islam does not promote violence in the first place. The full text is that every character in the film has an emotional response that helps the audience understand them. In front of all the action is the main character of Havildar Ishar Singh.
Sardar’s last serious and dramatic moment was at Gadar. Ishar Singh is Anurag Singh’s character as Akshay and he is the epitome of true Sikh values and pride. Her stature matches her confidence, and seeing her command the emotion and enthusiasm in Kesari is pure joy. This is what cinematic heroes should look like and Akshay Kumar is doing the role perfectly.
Parineeti Chopra gets a small but impactful role, whether it’s her character dance and Akshay’s comic that makes you smile and his tears break your heart. Rakesh Chaturvedi Om as the leader of Afghanistan also has a strong belief in his radicalism.
With brilliant art, intricate script and thunderous music, Kesari is a powerful war cry that evokes feelings of patriotism while also tearing your heart out with its sheer tragedy. The visceral power of his eyes and emotions is incredible.
