Sholay is a 1975 Indian drama film written by Salim-Javed, directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by his father G. P. Sippy. The film revolves around two criminals, Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan), who are hired by a retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan).

Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri also star as Veeru’s love interest Jai, Basanti and Radha, respectively. Sholay is considered a classic and one of the best Indian films. It was ranked first in the British Film Institute’s 2002 poll of the “10 Best Indian Films” of all time. In 2005, the judges at the 50th Filmfare Awards named it the best film of the 50th year.

The Sholay film was shot in the rocky hills of Ramanagara, [8] in the southern state of Karnataka over a period of two and a half years. After the Central Board of Film Certification ordered the removal of many violent films, Sholay was released with a running time of 198 minutes. In 1990, a director’s cut of 24 minutes came to home broadcasts.

When it first released, Sholay received negative reviews and lukewarm commercial response, but positive word of mouth helped it become a box office success. It broke the record for the most continuous shows across India and ran for over five years at the Minerva Theater in Mumbai. This film was also popular abroad in the Soviet Union.

It is the highest grossing Indian film of all time and it is the highest grossing Indian film till Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994). By most accounts, Sholay remains one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time, adjusted for inflation.

In the village of Ramgarh, a retired police officer Thakur Baldev Singh (Sanjeev Kumar) calls the petty thieves he once caught. Thakur thinks that the duo – Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai ​​(Amitabh Bachchan) – will be good enough to help him catch Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan), a dacoit wanted by the authorities for a reward of 50,000 rupees. Thakur asks them to hand over Gabbar to him, alive, for an additional sum of INR 20,000.

The two robbers tricked the dacoit Gabbar sent to rob the villagers. Soon after that, Gabbar and his army attacked Ramgarh during the Holi festival, and in the high-stakes battle, Veeru and Jai were on the side.

Thakur, despite having a gun nearby, does not help them. Veeru and Jai fight and the robbers escape. Both were angry at Thakur’s inaction, and thought of leaving the country. Thakur explained that Gabbar killed almost all his family members and cut off both his hands a few years ago. that’s why he can’t use a gun. She had hidden the incision by covering it with a robe. Living in Ramgarh, the hot-headed Veeru and the self-deprecating Jai endear themselves to the villagers. Veeru falls in love with Basanti (Hema Malini), a spirited, outspoken girl who earns a living by driving horse-drawn carriages. Jai falls in love with Radha (Jaya Bhaduri), Thakur’s widowed stepdaughter, who returns his love with cunning.

The conflict between Gabbar and Jai-Veeru’s gang eventually led to the capture of Veeru and Basanti by the dacoits. Jai attacks the gang and the three are able to escape with the dacoits and Gabbar is secretly in pursuit. Fighting behind rocks, Jai and Veeru are almost out of ammo. Veeru, not knowing that Jai was injured in the shooting, is forced to leave to get more ammo. Meanwhile, Jai, who continues to fire alone, decides to sacrifice himself by using his last shot to light a stick of dynamite on a nearby bridge. Veeru returns and Jai dies in his arms. Veeru was enraged, attacked Gabbar’s hole and caught the dacoit. Veeru almost kills Gabbar when Thakur appears and reminds Veeru of his promise to save Gabbar alive.

Thakur hits Gabbar hard with a shoe and breaks his hand. The police arrived and arrested Gabbar. After Jai’s funeral, Veeru leaves Ramgarh and finds Basanti waiting for him in the train. Radha was alone again.

The developers planned to release the 3D version on January 3, 2014. The 3D model costs the suppliers around Rs25 crore.

  • Screenwriter couple Salim-Javed communicated the concept of Sholay in a four-line script to G. P. Sippy and his son Ramesh Sippy. Ramesh Sippy liked the concept of Sholay and hired them to produce it. The video and dialogue of this movie is in Hindustani. The dialogues were written in Urdu by Salim-Javed, which was assisted by a Devanagari transcriber so that Hindi readers could read the dialogues in Urdu.
  • Sippy wanted Shatrughan Sinha to play the role of Jai. Amitabh Bachchan, who was not very built, was interested in getting the role for himself. It was done when Salim-Javed recommended it for Sholay in 1973;
  • Bachchan’s performance in their first collaboration, Zanjeer, convinced Salim-Javed that he was the right actor for the role. Amitabh also asked Dharmendra to say a word to him to get the role of Jai. Finally Amitabh got this role and Sholay made Amitabh a Superstar.
