‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ is an Indian comedy film directed by Advait Chandan that revolves around a popular character. Sitting on the train, he narrates his life story, explaining his thoughts on many important moments in Indian history to his fellow passengers. As a child, Laal was diagnosed with a disability that made him wear leg braces.

Laal Singh Chaddha expresses Forrest Gump’s views on life, love, behavior and destiny. He chooses words over mere tears, so expect a wide-eyed Aamir Khan to do a lot of Punjabi and PK’s body language with enthusiasm.
It raises the tempo of this movie a bit higher, of a big-ticket Hindi movie but retains the original essence – a Disney fairy tale without the luxury of magic but a deep-rooted belief in miracles. Laal Singh Chaddha (LSC) discovered these events but continued to stay in Forrest’s world.
Recycling is not easy territory to navigate. Remaking Forrest Gump (FG) is more complicated because it has a twist, a lot, a non-linear plot and a deeper and simpler approach to life and purpose. You watch an ordinary person wander through life, not looking for answers but finding them along the way.
He tells you his story as he embarks on a train journey from Pathankot to Chandigarh – his difficult childhood, his fiery mother (Mona Singh), his happiness with childhood Rupa (Kareena Kapoor Khan), wealth and his sudden abundance, his war, his friends (Naga). Chaitanya Akkineni as Bala and Manav Vij as Mohammed), face death and are in agony.
We can’t say if the movement is important, but it’s hard to follow because it hurts and takes away the first thing that you know very well how events unfold in it. The adapted screenplay by Atul Kulkarni, like its predecessor, combines fact and fiction.
It seamlessly integrates mythology with the political and cultural context of India. ‘Majhab mala pada kar sakta hai’ (Religious discussions can drive people apart). It does more than replace FG chocolate with gol-gappas. Be it the Ram Rath Yatra, Operation Blue Star, the 1975 emergency, the Kargil war, the 1993 Bombay bombings followed by Hindu-Muslim riots, a changed enemy and so on, Atul does his hard work well.
Speaking of words, Amitabh Bhattacharya’s music, especially in the opening song “Kahani” (sung by Mohan Kannan and Sonu Nigam in two versions) embodies the spirit and nature of the film. “Life is like rain, if you take it, leave. Hum Samundar ka ek katra hai, ya samandar hai hum?’ is a matter of living.
Coming to the modern person, if we look back at the fascinating career of Aamir Khan, his cinematographic choices are the inspirations of his life and political situation. Zindagi jeene ke do hi tarike hote hain… in Rang De Basanti or life is compared to pani puri in LSC – Zindagi golgappe ki tarah hoti hai.
Pait bhale hi bhar jaaye, mann nahi bharata. In spite of the boycott brigade, the actor expresses himself through his writings in which people are supported instead of religion. His willingness to play a famous role in his late 50s, which Hanks did in his late 30s, is commendable.
However, although it is exciting in its parts and done with care, it tries a little too hard and the result is a little something. His constant pauses, aging and “hmmms” sounded like interruptions. He seems to be as focused on his own behavior as he is on socializing with others.
You want her to lose the bulk of the character and keep it simple, something Kareena manages to pull off. She is well captured as Rupa aka Jenny de Forrest. It portrays Geet’s sad nature and Madhur Bhandarkar’s heroic style of wit, bringing her together, hitting the right notes and striking a delicate balance between involvement and separation.
Mona Singh is full of confidence and empathy for her character. However, one actor who inspires you is Manav Vij (remember Lieutenant Dan?). He is the one who gets the sound of Forrest Gump. Shot across India, as cathartic as it is unique, ‘Tur Kalleyan’ brings the film to life.
Director Advait Chandan enters the hot, funny and exciting satirical space of Rajkumar Hirani and achieves some success. It makes a faithful but long (2h40) adaptation that eloquently speaks to the Indian political landscape.
The movie may not be as exciting or immersive as the first one, but it will make you want to watch it as a family. During this changing culture, LSC maintains the old values that make it suitable for family migration. You will definitely remember the explosive cameo from Shah Rukh Khan and the unique look of Kamini Kaushal.

Filming started on October 31, 2019. The team announced that the Hindi film will be released in theaters on December 31, 2019.
